What is your teaching philosophy?

I prefer a student-centered approach that is highly engaging and caters to the interests of the pupil, but is also rigorous and focused on developing literacy-based, comprehensive musicianship.


How long have you been teaching music? At YMP?

I have been a public school music educator since 2000, and an instructor at Youth Music Project since 2014.


What is your favorite thing about teaching music?

I get to work and play music with student musicians all day, everyday!
What do you expect of your students in classes/lessons?
I expect that students commit to putting forth their best effort, be persistent and patient with themselves and one another. Learning music and/or an instrument is hard work and it takes time. However, being a dedicated student does pay-off and is very satisfying in the end.


About Brian

Brian earned a Master’s Degree in the Art of Teaching (Music) and a Bachelor’s of Arts in Music Instruction, both from Southern Oregon University. He also attended The Berklee College of Music, Hampshire College, Cornish College of the Arts and earned a Public School Administration credential through Portland State University.
