Group music classes at YMP vary in structure and content according to the instrument and the age group. Introductory music classes typically focus more on basics such as note reading, scales, basic rhythms, simple chords, and the like, while intermediate courses incorporate more advanced playing techniques and music theory concepts. Classes are divided by age group (kindergarten-2nd grade, 3rd grade-6th grade, and 7th-12th grade) and experience level (introduction or intermediate). For more information about specific course offerings, check out this link: https://youthmusicproject.org/enroll/

YMP instructors are committed to providing kids with great music instruction in rock, pop, and country styles. Our instructors are trained to work with students of all levels, whether they are just starting a new instrument or if they are more advanced in their abilities. If you’ve never picked up a guitar or if you’re a natural Elton John at the keyboard, we can find the right group class for you.

In the Rock Band class, kids will have a chance to work with a YMP rock band coach to make some rockin’ music with fellow musicians in their age group. More information about YMP music instructors can be found here https://youthmusicproject.org/about/faculty-and-staff/

Music education provides a wide variety of benefits for children. According to NPR, “the arts help create young adults who have better academic outcomes, are more civically engaged and exhibit higher career goals.” Studies show that music students have higher grades and SAT scores, better critical thinking and spatial reasoning skills, and superior creative thinking compared to kids who are not involved in music. Kids who study music develop valuable self-discipline and teamwork skills that will serve them well in work and school. Music gives kids a unique method of self-expression and emotional fulfillment that can become a life-long passion. Youth Music Project recognizes the importance of music education for all young people and we hope that our music lessons and music classes foster a love and appreciation for music that will last a lifetime.

YMP works hard to provide quality music instruction for children from all socio-economic backgrounds and financial situations. Cost should never be an issue for a child who wishes to learn an instrument, so YMP offers free or reduced tuition scholarships for those whose families provide proof of free or reduced lunch eligibility in school. For more information about scholarships, refer to this link: https://youthmusicproject.org/programs/scholarships/

Here at the Youth Music Project, we believe that every student in our community should experience rock, pop and country music education regardless of their family’s financial ability to pay. Located in the heart of old Willamette in West Linn, the Youth Music Project offers music lesson scholarships to students. Reduced price music lessons are offered to students who are on the reduced lunch program in their school districts. Free music lessons are offered to students who qualify for the free lunch program in their districts as well.

Music education benefits students in a number of ways. Studies show that kids who study music have higher grades and SAT scores, better critical thinking and spatial reasoning skills, and superior creative thinking compared to children who are not involved in music. Music students develop valuable self-discipline and teamwork skills that benefit them in school, work, and beyond. Music provides kids with a unique method of self-expression and emotional fulfillment that can become a life-long passion.

The Youth Music Project offers classes in group settings as well as private lessons on drums, guitar and piano. Each instrument is taught in a way that empowers the student and ultimately prepares them for their end of the term West Linn music recital. Students are encouraged to not only diligently practice in class, but are also encouraged to practice at home. Students receiving a Youth Music Project scholarship receive free instrument rentals. Students who practice at home are not only more prepared for class, but teach themselves the power of initiative and determination.

The Youth Music Project believes in the importance of music education for all young people and we hope that our music lessons and music classes foster a love and appreciation for music that will last a lifetime.

The Youth Music Projects diverse class offerings give students plenty of opportunities to make music in a variety of settings. Aspiring guitarists, drummers, and piano players can groove in a group class specific to their instrument, rock out in individual private lessons, or jam with fellow rockers in one of the Rock Band classes.

YMP rock bands cover songs such as “Just What I Needed” by the Cars, “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osborn and “Wild Flower” by the Jane Deer Girls. But covers aren’t all. With help from their band instructor, students can also write their own songs. Students have written songs like “Halloween Party” and “The Fall Song”. Some after only 8 weeks of instruction are able to get up in front of their family and friends and perform an original song on their new instruments. Instructors and staff members at the Youth Music Project are thrilled every time a new student performs confidently.

YMP offers students who enroll in rock band half off a second instrument specific class. Practicing in their band is a great way to foster community and empower YMP students while boosting self-confidence. Also being enrolled in an instrument specific class gives the student time to practice their instrument while also receiving attention to their specific instrument.

YMP offers a multitude of high quality group music classes and music lessons in guitar, piano, and drums based on a rock, pop, and country music curriculum. Instructors at YMP bring a variety of professional and educational music experience to make each course offering unique and worthwhile. Our lesson instructors are trained to work with students of all levels, whether they are just starting a new instrument or if they are more advanced in their abilities.
